The Lonely Husband

Reflections on emotional distance, avoidant attachment, and faith in marriage.

The Podcast that helped me understand

Updated October 18, 2026: This post was reformatted and lightly edited for punctuation and readability. No content changes were made.

There are a few moments in life where a single piece of information doesn’t just “teach” you something. It rewires your entire understanding of reality.

This podcast episode was one of those moments for me.

It didn’t fix my marriage, but it finally gave me language for the pain, confusion, and emotional whiplash I’d been stuck in for years.

If you’ve ever felt like the harder you love, the more your wife shuts down, this will hit you like a freight train.

Why I’m Sharing This

I’m not sharing this because it’s “interesting.”

I’m sharing it because this was the turning point where I stopped believing:

“Something is wrong with me.”

“I’m not enough.”

“If I just love harder, she’ll come back.”

And finally understood:
“I’m fearful avoidant… she’s dismissive/avoidant… and we’ve been reenacting a nervous-system war neither of us knew we were fighting.”

This podcast didn’t just expose the cycle. It explained why both people feel trapped inside it, even though one is pursuing and the other is withdrawing.

Before You Watch

If you’re a Christian husband, here’s what I want you to know before you press play:

  • You’re not crazy for wanting intimacy (emotional or physical).
  • You’re not broken because you’re hurting.
  • You’re not “too much” because you feel deeply.
  • You’re not less of a man because her rejection wounds you.
  • And you’re not the only one living in a “silent marriage that looks fine from the outside.”

Watch this with humility, but also with relief, because this finally explains the pattern without shaming either spouse.

Credit & Appreciation

This content, and much of the language used to describe the anxious-preoccupied and dismissive-avoidant dynamic, comes from the work of Dr. Sarah Hensley.

Her teaching has had a profound impact on my understanding of attachment in marriage, and I am deeply grateful for her clarity, courage, and willingness to speak into a pattern that so many couples silently suffer through.
